NEW YORK, Jan. 2 (AP) – A machete-wielding man attacked three police officers during a New Year’s Eve celebration in New York City, before one shot the man in the shoulder, authorities said. Two of them were hit in the head.
The attack happened just after 10 p.m. about eight blocks from Times Square, just outside the high-security zone where revelers undergo weapons checks.

The two officers were taken to hospital with one suffering a fractured skull and the other in serious condition and expected to recover.
Police have not identified the 19-year-old suspect, who is also expected to recover.

The attack and gunfire briefly caused some in the crowd to flee, but the incident did not detract from festivities in Times Square, which continued.
Mayor Eric Adams said at a news conference that he had spoken to an injured police officer while he was receiving stitches at the hospital.
“He’s in good spirits,” Adams said. “He understands his role in saving the lives of New Yorkers today.”
An investigation is underway to determine a motive for the attack, but authorities say they do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the public. (Associated Press)
