UAE’s Etihad Airways ranks among world’s safest full-service airlines

DUBAI: Etihad Airways and Emirates, the flag carrier of the United Arab Emirates, have once again ranked among the safest full-service airlines in the world. Airline safety and product rating website AirlineRatings.com published its 20 safest airline ratings on Tuesday, January 3, with Emirates airlines Etihad Airways and Emirates among the safest airlines in the world among the top ten airlines.

AirlineRatings.com developed its rankings after monitoring 385 different airlines. GCC carrier Qatar Airways also made it into the top ten list of full-service airlines. Etihad is the third safest airline in the world, followed by Emirates in seventh place, up 13 places from last year’s ranking.

Launched in June 2013, the website rates 385 airlines for safety, in-flight products and COVID-19 compliance using its unique seven-star rating system.

Meanwhile, the site also named UAE-based low-cost carrier flydubai and Air Arabia among the 20 safest low-cost airlines for 2023.

Geoffrey Thomas, editor-in-chief of AirlineRatings.com, said these airlines stand out in the industry, leading the way in safety, innovation and the introduction of new aircraft.

According to Thomas, for full-service airlines, the site analyzes crashes over a five-year period, serious accidents audited by aviation governing bodies and major associations over a two-year period, fleet age, expert analysis of pilot training, and COVID-19. 19 to formulate their determination in agreement.

“Our 2023 Safest 20 Airlines remain at the forefront of safety innovation, operational excellence and the introduction of new and more advanced aircraft such as the Airbus A350 (above) and Boeing 787,” he explained.

The top ten full-service airlines for 2023 are Qantas, Air New Zealand, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, TAP Portugal, Emirates, Alaska Airlines, EVA Air and Virgin Australia/Atlantic aviation.

Meanwhile, for low-cost airlines, the factors used to determine the top 20 safest low-cost airlines included accident records for the past two years, crash records for the past five years, audit results from aviation governing body the International Civil Aviation Commission Organization (ICAO), EU Prohibition List and Fleet Age.

AirlineRatings’ top ten safest low-cost airlines for 2022 in alphabetical order are Air Arabia, AirAsia Group, Allegiant, Air Baltic, easyJet, flydubai, Frontier, Jetstar Group, JetBlue and Air Indigo . Indian airline SpiceJet also made the list.

Thomas explained, “All airlines have accidents every day, and many of them are aircraft or engine manufacturing problems, not airline operational problems. How the crew handles these incidents makes the difference between a good airline or an unsafe airline.”
