As His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE, today marks his 17th anniversary as Ruler of Dubai, Tributes poured in from all directions, Highlighting how his incredible vision created the emirate into a world-class futuristic city.
In Dubai, a city of skyscrapers and otherworldly missions, the sky is never the limit because for Sheikh Mohammed, “the sky is just the beginning”.
While Sheikh Mohammed keeps pushing the emirate to new heights, he never forgets the ground. Emiratis and expats alike will recognize him instantly with the three-finger salute that sends love and inspiration, and when his car hits the road, no one will miss him.
Still, some residents and tourists were luckier than most in being able to meet and even greet Dubai’s ruler on several occasions when he surprised the public. Sheikh Mohammad never forgets his people, both citizens and expatriates, and that has always been shown.
Over the years, he has made 10 unexpected visits to people’s hearts:
2008: Building a new home for Emiratis
The ruler of Dubai sees a father figure in a citizen he has known for years, Salem Khamis Al Kaabi. In fact, it was his late father Sheikh Rashid who ordered the construction of a house for the Emiratis and his family in Wadi Kur. During the 2008 meeting, Sheikh Mohammed demanded that a new home be built for Salem.
2011: Coffee, anyone?
While driving in the desert, Sheikh Mohammed saw tourists admiring the scenery. He showed them true Arabian hospitality by serving them a jug of Emrati coffee (gahwa) from his car.
2011: Riding the Dubai Metro
To encourage residents to take advantage of the city’s world-class public transport, Sheikh Mohammed took the Metro unexpectedly.

The students of the UAE University in Al Ain were taking a break when suddenly a distinguished guest came to have dinner with them. The visit is part of Sheikh Mohammed’s efforts to ensure the school team has everything it needs to provide a world-class education.

Sheikh Mohammed visited several classrooms to welcome back more than a million children on the first day of school in Dubai.

Sheikh Mohammed came to the rescue of a European family whose vehicle was stranded in the UAE desert.
2021: epic desert tour
The ruler of Dubai welcomed a group of camel trekkers on their way to the global village on the final day of a 550km desert tour.
2021: Welcome to Dubai
Sheikh Mohammed took the time to meet and wave to cyclists taking part in the UAE Bike Tour, which began in Abu Dhabi and took them through different landscapes across the country.
