10 things to look forward to on the 2023 entertainment calendar

For mental health or simply for fun, it’s important to have things you can look forward to doing.

Now that 2023 has arrived, here are 10 things you might be interested in experiencing in the new year.

“The Boss” Returns

Bruce Springsteen rocked the BOK Center in 2009. He will return next month.

Accompanied by his E Street Band, Springsteen is scheduled to perform at the downtown Tulsa stage on February 21st.

When Springsteen debuted at the BOK Center 13 years ago, it was reportedly his first concert in Oklahoma since performing at the Norman Lloyd Noble Center in 1978.

“The last time we were in Tulsa,” Springsteen said before a long pause at the 2009 show. “Have we been here before? All I know is we’re here tonight and we’re here to wow the crowd.”

Tickets for Springsteen’s return to the show are on sale now. Springsteen was the first to sell tickets using Ticketmaster’s dynamic pricing model.That arouse public outrage When some fares skyrocket into the thousands. In Tulsa, however, there are a few more for less than $20.

Other musical artists scheduled to perform at the BOK Center in 2023 include: Keith Sweat (Oklahoma R&B Bash, January 28), The Judds (farewell tour, February 2), TobyMac (March 25), Journey/Toto (March 31), Koe Wetzel (April 14), Kane Brown (May 12), Lizzo (May 20), Shania Twain (June 3), Billy Strings (June 7) and Paramore (29 July).

Reba’s place

Atoka will get a boost from celebrity-branded attractions in 2023, thanks to Oklahoma-based country music artist Reba McEntire.

McEntire works with the Choctaw Nation and the City of Atoka on Reba’s Place. Built inside a century-old Masonic temple at 319 Court St. in Atoka, Reba’s Place is a restaurant, bar, live music venue and retail store. The two-story dining space will lead to a central stage for live music.

Early visitors commented on their experiences on the Reba’s Place Facebook page. The grand opening is about to take place.If you’re going there with a group of 12 or more people can book the spot for February and beyond by email groups@rebasplace.com.

“Hamilton’s Back”

Hamilton returns to the Tulsa Center for the Performing Arts March 7-19 for 16 shows.

“Hamilton was the story of America then, and America tells it now,” the press release said. Blending hip-hop, jazz, R&B and Broadway, Hamilton’s soundtrack told the story of America’s founding father, Alexander Hamilton, and created a revolutionary moment in theater — A musical that has had a profound impact on culture, politics and education.”

Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the books, music and lyrics, Thomas Kail directed, Andy Blankenbuehler choreographed, Alex Lacamoire music supervised and orchestrated, and Hamilton adapted from the acclaimed biography of Ron Chernow. In addition to the Tony, Grammy and Olivier Awards, “Hamilton” has received an unprecedented special recognition from the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Kennedy Center Honors.

“Hamilton” is part of Celebrity Attractions’ 2022-2023 Broadway season, which will continue with “Ain’t Too Proud — The Life and Times of the Temptations” and Disney’s “The Lion King.”

Stone of Ages

The University of Tulsa’s football stadium hasn’t hosted a major concert event since the New Kids on the Block show in 1990 drew 42,000 people.

The drought will end when Def Leppard, Motley Crue and Alice Cooper will tour Chapman Stadium on Aug. 16. If the show goes well, you can look forward to more concert events at the stadium in the future.

Kani Festival

Church Studio, a recording studio and former church formerly owned by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Leon Russell, returned to glory in 2022 after a major renovation.

Church Studio and LeonLifers (a huge Russell fan) are teaming up to host Carney Fest on April 15th.

Performers will include Reverend Horton Heat, Ann Bell & the Tulsa Sound, Brad Absher & the Superials, Jake & the Idols, Dante & the Bird Dogs, Brent Giddens, Until Now, Black Crown, Travis Kidd and Zac Wenzel.

If you’re curious about where Carney Fest got its name, consider Russell’s 1972 album “Carney,” released on his Shelter Records label. The album included the songs “Tight Rope” and “This Masquerade”.

More ‘Reserved Dogs,’ ‘The King of Tulsa’

The groundbreaking and critically acclaimed series “Reservation Dogs,” filmed in Oklahoma, has received a third season.

Co-created by Tulsa filmmaker Sterling Harjo, “Reservation Dogs” follows the adventures of four Native youths in the fictional town of Oakne. Season 2 ends with Belle, Willie Jack, Cheese, and Elola Danan stranded in California. Let’s send them home.

The writers of The New York Times, Variety and Rolling Stone ranked “Reserved Dogs” at the top of their list of the best TV shows of 2022. The series is available on Hulu’s FX.

Paramount+ series “The King of Tulsa,” starring Sylvester Stallone, has been approved for a second season. The first season was primarily filmed in Oklahoma City.

“Killer of the Flower Moon”

In 2021, Martin Scorsese filmed Killers of the Flower Moon in Pawhuska and other Oklahoma towns.

According to reports, the film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, may premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, followed by a theatrical release.

Killers of the Flower Moon is based on David Grann’s book about the serial murders in oil-rich Osage in the 1920s.

“The theme, I’m glad to see it come to light now,” actor Brendan Fraser said at the 2022 Pop Culture Convention in Dallas. “this point is very important.”

From Rembrandt to Monet

Visitors to the Philbrook Museum of Art can immerse themselves in European masterpieces in 2023.

“Rembrandt to Monet: 500 Years of European Painting from the Joslin Museum of Art” arrives in Philbrook on February 22 and runs through May 28.

Paintings by renowned artists including Rembrandt, Titian, El Greco, Bouguereau, Renoir and Monet for the first time from Omaha, Nebraska’s prestigious collection at the Joslin Museum of Art to head to Tulsa .

The exhibition spans nearly 500 years and features more than 50 works of art.

“The Princess Bride” Concert

If you liked the 1987 movie “The Princess Bride,” here’s something for you:

“The Princess Bride” with the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra will be held on April 15 at the Tulsa Center for the Performing Arts.

A promo for the event says: “Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles. … Experience the full symphony of one of the most beloved films of all time like never before The strength of the group, performing the entire score live.”

The score by composer Mark Knopfler was specially arranged for the symphony orchestra. Ron Spigelman will serve as guest conductor.

The Pryor-based music and camping festival celebrates its 15th year in 2022. It’s been held over Labor Day weekend each of the past two years, but a date for 2023 has yet to be announced.
