Switzerland’s Marko Oldermatt extended his second straight giant slalom title on Saturday on the home snow in Abelboden, ahead of Norway’s Henrik Kristofferson and fellow Swiss Lojk Mellard. overall lead at the World Cup.

Oldmat, who won the World Cup overall last season, set the fastest times in both races on the Agba Green piste, 0.73 seconds ahead of Kristofferson, with Maillard third at 1.66.

The 25-year-old extended his overall lead at the World Cup with a 400-point lead over Norway’s Alexander Amot Kild. Kristofferson is 81 points behind third place.

“It was fantastic, it was crazy, I really enjoyed today’s race,” Odermatt said, as 24,000 Swiss flag-waving spectators cheered.

“It’s definitely the best place to celebrate a win. Last year I knew I could win this game and now I have those emotions.”

Norway’s Lucas Brassen, the only man to beat him in giant slalom this season, was knocked out in the first round, helping Oldermatt to his 17th World Cup title.

Kristoffersen admits that the fast track is perfect for local hero Odermatt.

“I didn’t have a chance when it was so straight in the second round. He’s fantastic on these straights, and when he’s in that shape and flying up, it’s so easy,” he said.

“I couldn’t get him when he was in the form he was. He took a lot of risks. But I was the only one who got close to him, so that was fine.”

For Oldmatt, it was his sixth win in 13 races this season and his fourth in five giant slalom races.

He holds a 115-point lead over Kristofferson in the men’s slalom in Adelboden on Sunday.
