Peru launches corruption case against Keiko Fujimori | Corruption News

The 46-year-old daughter of the imprisoned former President Alberto Fujimori denied these allegations.

But the prosecutors stated that they will demand 30 years and 10 months in prison for Fujimori on the grounds of money laundering, organized crime, obstruction of justice, and false declarations.

She has been in pre-trial detention twice and was held for a total of 16 months until she was released last year due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The hearing in front of Judge Victor Zuniga on Tuesday was the first step in the first trial of a prominent Peruvian politician in the Odebrecht scandal.

It aims to review the charges against Fujimori and 39 co-defendants, after which the judge can approve all or part of the indictment drafted by the prosecutor Jose Domingo Perez.

The defendants include Fujimori’s husband, American Mark Vito Villanella, and members or leaders of her Popular Force Party, which have long dominated Peruvian politics. But now it is the second largest parliament after Castillo’s Free Peru Movement.

Fujimori did not appear in court on Tuesday and was represented by her lawyer Giuliana Loza.

Under the conditions of lifting the pre-trial detention, Fujimori is not allowed to leave Lima without special permission, and is not allowed to contact witnesses in the case.

The pre-trial hearing may take days, weeks, or even months.

Four former presidents have been implicated in the Odebrecht incident, including two-term leader Allen Garcia, who committed suicide in 2019 when the police came to his home to arrest him.

Alberto Fujimori was in jail for unrelated corruption and crimes against humanity.
