WORLD NEWS | Indian-born Ranj Pillai to become 10th governor of Canada’s Yukon Territory

TORONTO, Jan. 10 (PTI) — Cabinet minister Ranj Pillai, of Indian descent, will be sworn in as the 10th prime minister of Canada’s Yukon on Jan. 14, becoming the second leader, according to media reports. Politicians of Indian descent in the Canadian region Tuesday.

When nominations closed on Jan. 7, Pillay was the only candidate in the running, according to the Yukon News.

“I am honored and humbled to be named the leader of the Yukon Liberal Party. We have so much to be proud of and I am very excited about the future of the Yukon,” Pillay tweeted Tuesday.

The Yukon Government Executive Committee Office said Pillay and his cabinet will be sworn in next Saturday afternoon in a public ceremony in the foyer of the Jim Smith Building.

He will become the second prime minister in Canadian Indian heritage history, after Ujjal Dosanjh held the post in British Columbia from 2000 to 2001.

Canada has 10 provinces and three territories.

After his campaign released a statement, Pillay said he was “committed to working hard, finding common ground, acting strategically and resolutely defending the interests of the Yukon.”

“I look forward to serving all Yukonians as our dedicated team continues to make this region one of the best places to call home,” he said.

The leader also thanked outgoing Premier Sandy Silver for her “leadership and dedication”.

Prime Minister Silver – the country’s longest-serving prime minister who has led the party to two election victories since 2012 – announced on September 9 last year that he would be in the party Resign after finding a suitable candidate. A new leader takes over as prime minister.

The current MLA for Porter Creek South, Pillai was first elected to the Yukon Legislative Assembly in the 2016 territorial election.
