Lahore, January 12 (PTI) In a midnight drama in the parliament of Pakistan’s Punjab state, Chief Minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi managed to secure a vote of confidence, paving the way for the dissolution of parliament. Parliament is subject to the wishes of ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan.
PMLN’s Punjab governor Baligur Rehman had sought a confidence vote from CM Elahi last month to block the dissolution of parliament. He has rescinded notifying Elahi and his cabinet of failure to comply with his orders. However, the Lahore High Court reinstated Elahi and his cabinet.

Following protests from opposition parties, Elahi secured the required 186 votes from the Punjab assembly in the ongoing session at 1 a.m. Thursday, according to court observations.

Punjab Assembly Speaker Sibtain Khan chaired the meeting and said CM Elahi had secured the 186 votes needed to secure a vote of confidence.
Opposition parties led by the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) boycotted the meeting and announced a challenge to the confidence vote process in court.
Union Home Minister Rana Sanaullah has claimed that the proceedings of the Punjab Assembly session violated the rules and the Constitution and opposition parties will challenge them in the LHC. He said CM Elahi got 181 votes but it was shown as 186. “We will prove this fraud in court,” he said.
Elahi will secure the vote of confidence as a victory for Imran Khan’s vision. He asked the opposition to “accept defeat gracefully”.

Fawad said Elahi would withdraw his high court petition on the governor’s order. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) parliament, which is owned by Imran Khan’s Pakistani Justice Movement, will also be dissolved, he said.
Khan has said he wants to dissolve the Punjab and KP assemblies in order to push the PMLN-led federal government to call snap polls. Khan said only fresh polls could lift the country out of the economic crisis.
However, the federal government has insisted on holding a general election after the government’s term ends in August.
