Britain’s hospitals are overwhelmed, a British doctor warns National Health Service (NHS) is even worse in countries with weak healthcare infrastructure such as war-torn Ukraine.

Dr Paul Ransom works part-time in UK hospitals as well as overseas humanitarian work. In a letter to British newspaper The Argus, he described hospitals in Sussex, like the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, with overcrowded corridors and staff who were “knowledgeable”.

Dr Ransom said: “Sometimes I feel guilty when I see my NHS colleagues working hard to keep patients safe, sometimes even keeping them alive in worse conditions than I’ve seen in many of the hospitals I’ve worked in overseas.”

“I’ve worked in Ukraine, Georgia, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and many other places, and it’s rare to see corridors filled with patients waiting for cubicles,” he added.

Dr. Ransom said no other European country would expose patients to these conditions. He added: “Sometimes, when I read information from Brighton overseas, it seems to me that we should be supplying services to UK hospitals.”

Dr Ransom said he did not want to blame hospital management and that the UK government was responsible for the current chaos in hospitals across the country.

In his letter, he recommends setting up temporary medical infrastructure as has been done during Covid. In addition, the government should increase staffing levels, increase employee wages, and use temporary facilities.
