vertical entertainment North American rights have been acquired”documenta documentary about the rap legend whose life and career were upended after a near-fatal accident.
DOC, a hip-hop lyricist and producer who has written for NWA and Dr. Dre, was involved in a car accident in 1989 and lost his voice. Dave Caplan’s The DOC follows 30 years later as he contemplates a risky experimental surgery to restore his vocal cords.
Following last year’s world premiere, Vertical will release the film in theaters in Spring 2023 Tribeca Film Festival.
“DOC was an incredible talent and visionary who helped bring the hip-hop movement into the American mainstream,” Vertical partner Peter Jaroway said in a statement. “When his remarkable life unfolds on screen, it’s like watching the history of hip hop before your very eyes, witnessed by industry legends who count him as friends, collaborators and mentors. The film combines footage from The DOC with interviews with industry legends including Dr. Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Erykah Badu, Ice Cube, Xzibit, Too $hort, Kurupt, Daz Dillinger, Tone Loc, Big Boy , Sir Jinx , DJ Yella, Jewell and Dr. Rock tell the rapper’s life story and legacy in the music industry. Born Tracy Lynn Curry in 1968, the artist known as The DOC is also known for co-founding Death Row Records and serving as Snoop Dogg’s mentor.
The film is produced by The DOC, Gary Ousdahl and Caplan. The executive producers are Brent Mack and Erykah Badu. The cinematographer for the film was Thomas McCallum, the editor was Kevin Butt, the score was by Kyle Townsend, and the music supervisor was Joel C. Hay.
