Green hydrogen is produced using green electricity from renewable sources such as wind or solar energy, in a process that separates water into oxygen and hydrogen through electrolysis.Hydrogen will be an important part of a net-zero energy system and play a key role in decarbonizing hard-to-electrify sectors such as heavy industry and long-distance transport, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency.[1]. The Global Green Hydrogen Energy Market is expected to reach . $72 billion By 2030, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) estimates that hydrogen demand could be between 150 and 500 million metric tons per year by 2050[2].
In December last year, Masdar announced its new shareholding structure and green hydrogen business unit, aiming to achieve 100 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity and 1 million tons of green hydrogen production per year by 2030. Masdar has actively participated in several energy-related projects for green hydrogen production. Last year, Masdar signed an agreement with major state-backed organizations in Egypt to collaborate on the development of a green hydrogen production plant in the country, with the aim of producing up to 480,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year with 4 GW of electrolyzer capacity by 2030.
