German Gulf Engineering Consultant joins hands with UAE University to provide Emirati youth with energy-saving training

Energy Voices 2023, in partnership with United Arab Emirates University, combines ‘Save Energy’ campaign, energy management and auditing internships and training for sustainable tomorrows for young nationals

Abu Dhabi: In the context of the UAE Government’s ‘Zero Emissions by 2050’ energy strategy and the hosting of COP28 in Abu Dhabi in 2023, UAE University and Abu Dhabi-based German Gulf Engineering Consultants (GGEC) have teamed up to deliver an energy management audit aimed at young Emirati National training programs and internships.

As part of the plan— Voice of Energy 2023 – There will also be a simultaneous campaign to promote the use of refillable water bottles to instil sustainable responsibility in young people for a carbon neutral future. Under the initiative, students at five universities in Abu Dhabi will receive refillable water bottles in support of the UAE government’s efforts to ban single-use plastics.

Elaborating on Energy Voices 2023, Dr Saud Muhammad AlMarzooqi, Acting Associate Professor of Student Affairs at UAE University, said: “Winning the bid to host COP28, the global climate summit in 2023, adds another positive angle to the strategic objective of internship and energy training programs for UAE nationals. The program is well suited for Emirati youth to engage with climate change, energy conservation measures and focus on renewable energy.”

Under the scheme, 50 selected Emirati students from five universities will be provided with paid internships and training in energy management and auditing. Upon completion of the program, students are awarded certificates of achievement at a grand awards ceremony.

GGEC’s CSR Initiatives – Voice of Energy 2023 – Also in the context of the next UN Climate Change Conference in 2023 (COP28), which will be hosted by the UAE at Dubai Expo City. Voice of Energy 2023 It is also supported by Abu Dhabi University, Zayed University, ADNOC and key private partners.

Mr. Sunilan Menothuparambil, Managing Director of GGEC, said: “All participants of the training, our partners and those associated with Energy Voices will commit to using refillable water bottles and stopping the use of single-use plastics.” He added that the specially designed Reusable bottles have been sourced and will be distributed to all stakeholders participating in training and climate change awareness campaigns.

“Our plan will also include ten actions to promote energy efficiency across themes such as – save energy at home, walk, cycle or use public transport, eat more vegetables, control the urge to travel, stop food waste, reduce, reuse, repair and recycling, switch from conventional to renewable energy sources, support environmentally friendly products, use electricity and promote earth friendliness,” he said, adding that it would also contribute to UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 – good health and wellbeing – and Contribute in your own way to achieve the UAE’s net zero emissions target by 2050.

In appreciation of Energy Voices 2023, Alyaziyah Sultan Al Dhaheri, President of UAE University, also presented a souvenir to Mr. Sunilan Menothuparambil.

“This may be the first time the UAE offers a comprehensive climate change and energy management program and internship. Voice of Energy 2023 It is also unique that national entities join hands with the private sector to advance the cause of sustainable development. This demonstrates the broader adoption of the UAE’s strategic commitment to net zero and how keen private sector players are to advance the cause,” said Mr Sunilan Menotupalambir.

According to Mr. Sunilan, the initiative is driven by German Gulf’s corporate responsibility mission of giving back to the community, under the theme ‘Living in Harmony with the Community and the Environment’, to support and promote climate change initiatives in the UAE. The training program will enable participating students to progress to higher level courses and take advantage of job opportunities in sustainable energy management.

The focus of the training will include effective energy audits, energy management practices in the real estate industry, energy efficiency in buildings, energy efficiency tools and techniques, and efficient operations and management.

In addition to current students, all nationals and expatriates can also enroll in the program.

A series of activities are also planned around the cause of energy efficiency in Abu Dhabi, for ordinary people from all walks of life to appreciate and contribute to the country’s efforts. These events include webinars, essay competitions, children’s drawing activities, short film competitions, the Greenathon bike marathon, and more.
