Islamabad [Pakistan]Jan 15 (ANI): A court in Pakistan has granted two-day remand to a prominent journalist for alleged involvement in leaking personal tax data of the family of ex-army chief (ret) Qamar Javed Bajwa And was arrested.

“There is evidence against Shahid Aslam that the suspect was leaking information,” prosecutors were quoted as saying by International News.

Veteran journalist Shahid Aslam, however, has denied all allegations against him, saying there is no evidence he has done nothing wrong.

In November, Pakistan’s Finance Minister Ishaq Dar took notice of the “illegal and unprovoked” leak of tax information by the Bajwa family. “This is a clear breach of the full confidentiality of tax information required by law,” a statement from the finance ministry read.

Dar had said he had received an interim report related to the leak of Bajwa’s income tax records, Pakistani newspapers reported. He added that they had tracked down some of those involved in the act.

A damaging report last year revealed a dramatic increase in the fortunes of close relatives of Pakistan’s former army chief before his term ended.

Investigative publication Fact Focus has revealed how members of Bajwa’s immediate and extended family within a few years started a new business and became the owners of farmhouses in Pakistan’s prestigious cities, earning billions in the process.

Fact Focus’s investigative report is supported by data from an investigation into the financial transactions of the Bajwa family, which includes his wife Ayesha Amjad, his daughter-in-law Mahnoor Sabir and other close family members.

Based on tax returns and other financial statements, the report reveals how, between 2013 and 2017, Bajwa revised his 2013 wealth statement three times after he was appointed commander-in-chief of the national army. (Arnie)
