World News | Pakistan rights group condemns desecration of Ahmadiyya place of worship in Punjab

[ad_1]

Islamabad [Pakistan]Jan 15 (ANI): The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has expressed its strong condemnation of the desecration of Ahmadiyya places of worship in Wazirabad district of Punjab province and called for the protection of such places for religious minorities in the country.

“HRCP strongly condemns the district government’s desecration of the historic Ahmadiyya place of worship in Wazirabad on January 10,” the human rights group said in a statement posted on its Twitter handle.

According to HRCP, the Wazirabad government must compensate the local Ahmadiyya community for its actions and ensure that such incidents do not recur.

This week, the Express Tribune reported that a historic place of worship in the Ahmadi neighborhood of Wazirabad was allegedly desecrated by the local administration.

A local Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) leader filed a complaint alleging that the Ahmadi community built a room that looked similar to a nearby mosque with a minaret.

The HRCP statement added: “The ambiguity of the complaint filed by local TLP leaders should drive home the urgent need for a task force to protect places of worship for all religious minorities, as envisioned in the 2014 Supreme Court decision.”

A representative of the Ahmadi community condemned the act in an interview with Pakistan Daily, saying the desecration “was tantamount to discrimination against them and discrimination against the Supreme Court’s judgment”.

Rights groups say Pakistan’s Ahmadi Muslim community has been the victim of systemic discrimination, harassment and attacks for decades. The development comes a month after a similar incident was reported in Gujranwala last month. (Arnie)
