MADRID, Jan. 15 (AP) — Thousands of health workers returned to the streets of the Spanish capital Sunday to protest what they say Madrid’s public health care system has been dismantled by its conservative regional government.
Marchers carried homemade signs that translate into English as “SOS Public Healthcare” and “Stop Privatisation” to protest staffing shortages and criticize local authorities for favoritism of private healthcare providers.

The incident was the latest in a series of protests by public health workers in Madrid against the capital region’s government, which is led by People’s Party heavyweight Isabel Ayuso.
The union that organized Sunday’s demonstration said that while Madrid has the highest per capita income, it spends the least per capita on primary health care of all Spanish regions. They claim that for every €2 spent on health care in Madrid, €1 goes to the private sector.

Ayuso claimed the protests were motivated by the political interests of leftist rivals ahead of May regional elections in much of Spain. (Associated Press)
