Florida [US]Jan 18 (ANI): The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) on Tuesday added the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open as the latest destination on the women’s world professional tennis tour.
The WTA 500 class event will be held on the outdoor hard courts of the Zayed Sports City International Tennis Center in the heart of Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, from February 6 to 12.
The venue has a rich tennis history. It has hosted the 2021 WTA Women’s Open, which was won by Ariana Sabalenka, as well as the Mubadala World Tennis Championships exhibition event for the past 15 years.
The Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open will step up February’s swing in the Middle East with Abu Dhabi kicking off the week of 6 February, followed by the Qatar TotalEngergies Open (Doha) on 13 February and the 2 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on 19th October.
“We are delighted that the Hologic WTA Tour is coming to Abu Dhabi, as the MENA region has played an integral role in the WTA tradition of providing women around the world with the opportunity to compete at the highest level since 2001,” said WTA Chairman and CEO, Steve Simon was quoted as saying by WTA.com.
“We are delighted to be working with the event organizers to showcase our products in front of passionate fans in the region and are very grateful for their commitment to building our presence in the region by staging this world-class event,” added Simon .
Qualification for the tournament will begin on Sunday 5 February with a draw for the 28 singles teams and 16 doubles teams on Monday 6 February. (ANI)
