A new AI Center of Excellence has been created that will focus on finding carbon-neutral solutions for existing energy resources and improving access to new AI technologies for Arabic speakers.

The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), in partnership with IBM, has officially launched the AI Center as part of the World Future Energy Summit at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week. The center aims to advance collaborations to improve the adoption of AI technologies and help drive sustainable development.

Specialist programs from IBM and MBZUAI focus on decarbonisation, conducting advanced research on climate change mitigation and adaptation. The joint research team will work on developing underlying artificial intelligence models that could help inform the deployment of clean and renewable energy in the electrification of multiple sectors of the economy. This approach will lay the groundwork for the use of carbon-neutral solutions while also enabling adaptation and resilience.

NLP for Arabic dialects

The AI Center of Excellence will also work on improving NLP for Arabic dialects, making AI more usable and flexible for Arabic speakers. Improving NLP capabilities in Arabic dialects will help address civic, social, and business challenges while enabling real-life applications such as personalized customer service, artificial intelligence assistants, improved search and fraud detection, and more.

“The only way to achieve net zero is through disruptive technologies and innovations that fundamentally reimagine our energy production and consumption—using big data to help drive more effective decision making and problem solving. With our vision to benefit from advanced technological innovations, we are delighted to launch the Center of Excellence. This partnership between MBZUAI and IBM underscores the commitment of both organizations to develop AI solutions for the benefit of humanity,” said Minister of Industry and Advanced Technologies , said Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Chairman-elect of COP28 and Chairman of MBZUAI.

“IBM’s partnership with MBZUAI will leverage artificial intelligence to address some of the most pressing issues of our time, including sustainability and net-zero strategies,” said Arvind Krishna, IBM Chairman and CEO. “The new Center of Excellence will also foster local digital skills and attract leading researchers, which will contribute to the realization of the UAE’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2031.”

Clean Energy Solutions

The deployment and use of clean energy solutions is one of the main pillars of the UAE’s model for addressing climate change challenges and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, in line with the UAE’s 2050 Net Zero Strategy initiative. The AI Center of Excellence program works with MBZUAI faculty and students, leveraging the talents of IBM researchers with expertise in data science, machine learning and NLP. These teams will work together to advance basic and applied research goals.

Through the IBM SkillsBuild platform, IBM will provide MBZUAI students and staff with access to IBM tools, software, courseware and cloud accounts for teaching, learning and non-commercial research. In addition, MBZUAI will gain access to curated AI courses, lectures, labs, industry use cases, design thinking courses, and AI practitioner certification. — trade arab news agency
