The UAE Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT) has issued a decree to regulate the trade in recycled plastic water bottles according to the highest public health and food safety standards.
Announced at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2023, the new ministerial decision contributes to the UAE’s commitment to conserving resources and supporting the transition to a circular economy.
It will help attract new investment by expanding the plastic recycling industry. It is fully in line with the vision and objectives of the current version of ADSW and supports the UAE’s net zero emission goals. This is expected to reduce carbon emissions, increase the country’s domestic value by AED8-300 million (US$22-82 million) per year, and create jobs.

“The new decision is in line with the Ministry’s strategic objective of enhancing the contribution of quality infrastructure and the industrial sector to the national economy,” said Omar Al Suwaidi, Deputy Minister of MoIAT.
He noted that MoIAT is keen to involve all stakeholders in the decision. Representatives from the National Food Safety Council and the UAE Food and Beverage Manufacturers Association, food and recycling experts and researchers were consulted to ensure the containers were safe to use as water bottles.
Regulation
The decision allows the use of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) produced at MoIAT-approved recycling facilities that have obtained a certificate of conformity under the UAE Food Contact Material Control Regulations
The decision also states that recycling facilities must provide documentation that they employ an effective quality system and good manufacturing practices for materials that come into contact with food. These include a report from an accredited laboratory in the UAE certifying that the recalled product has been tested for safety, a report showing that the bottled water complies with health and safety requirements, including migration testing of packaging materials in accordance with applicable technical regulations and regulations, and Quality and Safety Risk Assessment Report for Recycled Raw Materials Used in Bottled Drinking Water. — trade arab news agency
