MoHAP One Health approach helps identify zoonotic diseases

The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has proposed a ‘One Health’ approach to identifying zoonotic diseases.

This was done in a training workshop organized in collaboration with the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean.

Targeted at staff in the healthcare, sanitation and animal health sectors, the workshop focused on ‘One Health’ as ​​an approach that requires collaboration across multiple sectors to combat zoonotic diseases. Zoonotic diseases are infectious diseases of humans caused by pathogens that can be transmitted from nonhumans (usually vertebrates) to humans and vice versa.

It also discusses how best to achieve optimal human and animal health, and how to protect the environment by identifying and assessing the risks associated with these diseases to reduce and combat their impact.

The event is in line with the Department of Health’s ongoing efforts to tackle disease and epidemics, strengthen community health and improve the efficiency of the health system.

Dr. Fatima Al Attar, Director, Office of International Health Regulations; Fatima Hussein, Director, Epidemiology and Surveillance Division, and Nada Hassan Al Marzouqi, Director, Department of Public Health and Prevention, MoHAP attended the meeting and participated in the workshop held at the Ministry of Health headquarters.

Event participants were briefed on the practical steps to be taken in the process of identifying priority zoonotic diseases, including mechanisms for assessing the risk of these diseases, ways to prevent and control them, and guidelines for collective action in this regard.

The workshop highlighted the importance of identifying and assessing priority zoonotic diseases using a One Health approach. This approach involves collaboration between experts in human health, animal health and environmental protection to effectively control and reduce the impact of these diseases. The data and technical knowledge gained through this process can be used to develop plans to tackle zoonotic diseases.

Dr. Hussain Abdul Rahman Al Rand, Assistant Undersecretary for the Public Health Sector, emphasized that the training workshop was organized to support the Ministry’s integrated efforts to develop an approach to enhance the capacity of workers in the healthcare, sanitation and animal health sectors Efforts to prevent health threats associated with zoonotic diseases.

“Identifying and assessing priority zoonotic diseases is important to reduce their impact and effectively control them. This requires coordination and cooperation among all parties involved in human, animal and environmental health,” Al Rand said, adding that effective communication Sharing information between and with authorities is critical to preparing for the potential risks posed by these diseases.

Training stakeholders on this process and integrating it into national health systems is necessary to effectively identify zoonotic diseases and develop national plans for preparedness, surveillance and response to health threats, says Fatima Hussein.
