President Wavell Ramkalawan moderated a successful discussion with the Masdar delegation while participating in Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ASWD) 2023. A meeting with Mohammad Abdelqader El Ramahi, Chief Green Hydrogen Officer at Masdar, and Simon Bräunigerr, Senior Manager, Project Management Services focused on the way forward for the implementation of the Seychelles Integrated Power Generation Plan.

This is in line with the growth of the Seychelles economy and the increased need to implement a power generation plan that will meet the long-term needs associated with increased economic activity, while also fulfilling the Seychelles Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) commitments made by the Seychelles government at COP27.

Seychelles supports the transition to integrating more renewable energy and using cleaner fuels for electricity generation in the short to medium term. Yesterday’s meeting gave Seychelles the opportunity to present Masdar with several projects for consideration that would put Seychelles on track to further strengthen its role in the global fight against climate change. As a result, proposals for the implementation of various major renewable energy projects have been made for Mahe, Praslin and La Digue.

This includes various renewable photovoltaic (PV) projects in the form of agricultural PV, floating PV systems, PV plants mounted on elevated structures, etc. on the three main islands mentioned above. The PUC also recognizes the need to transition to cleaner fuels in the short to medium term, so discussions with the Masdar team have also revolved around potential conventional power generation projects, such as transitioning to hydrogen.

Following the talks in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, the most suitable and feasible projects will be approved and a memorandum of understanding between the two entities will be drafted.

The Seychelles delegation was also present at the discussion, Mr Flavien Joubert, Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Climate Change, Mr Joel Valmont, Chief Executive Officer of Utilities, and Mr Vincent Amelie, Chief Executive Officer of Meteorological Services.
