Man posing as UAE royal aide leaves Indian hotel with nearly $30,000 in unpaid bills – Middle East Monitor

A man posing as a UAE resident and staff member of the Abu Dhabi royal family is wanted by Indian police after leaving a five-star hotel in Delhi without settling outstanding bills totaling $28,330 (Rs 2.3 lakh). The defendant, identified as Mahamed Sharif, also reportedly stole silverware and a mother-of-pearl tray from his hotel room at the Leela Palace Hotel, where he had lived for more than four months .

Sharif allegedly stayed at the hotel from August 1 to November 20 last year and left without informing anyone. He was reportedly charged on Saturday following a complaint from hotel management Indian Express.

According to the complainant, Sharif told the hotel authorities that he lived in the UAE and worked at the office of Sheikh Farah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a member of the Abu Dhabi royal family. He presented a fake business card, UAE resident card and other documents and is currently being checked, police said.

“Guests checked into the hotel using fake business cards and impersonated important officials of the United Arab Emirates government,” a police report said.

The hotel authority also claimed that the man often boasted that he “worked and lived with the royal family of Abu Dhabi” to appear “influential”, and that he had personally worked with the sheikh and that his reason for staying in India was official business.

He is said to have paid part of the bill before giving the hotel a check, which was later returned due to insufficient funds.

“This appears to have been completely pre-planned as we were under the impression that by 22 November 2022 the hotel would have cleared dues via checks submitted by him. This clearly demonstrates that Mr. Sharif had malicious intent and a clear intent to defraud the hotel authorities,” the complainant told police.
