ABU DHABI, 20th January, 2023 (WAM) — Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and UAE Special Envoy for Climate Change, said that declaring 2023 as the Year of Sustainable Development reflects the UAE’s commitment to promoting and sustainable development of the sector, and paves the way for the country’s efforts to accelerate global climate action ahead of COP28.
In a statement issued today, Dr Al Jaber added that the UAE has long believed that the principles of sustainability must be embedded in every sector of the economy. “The country’s commitment to sustainable development, led by its founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, remains a guiding light for the current leadership.”
The Year of Sustainability will culminate in the most important climate event of the year, the UAE COP28 conference, which will be held in Dubai Expo City from 30 November to 12 December 2023.
Sultan Al Jaber continued, “The UAE will strive to make COP28 a part of unity and action. It will listen, engage and build partnerships with all those who seek to play a constructive role in the clean energy transition. It will connect the global north and south, Including the public and private sectors, scientists and civil society, women and youth. It will raise ambition and translate goals into concrete action.”
“The ‘Year of Sustainability’ is a reminder that innovation is needed in all sectors to drive inclusive and transformational development – ​​and the vital role the UAE must play in shaping the future,” he concluded.
