director Doug Liman said he paid for himself Brett Kavanaugh Record justiceThe film, which premiered Friday night at the Sundance Film Festival, may be far from finished, as new hints began pouring in within a half hour of Thursday’s announcement of the highly classified project.

“I thought the movie was done … I thought I was off the hook. I was at Sundance and I thought, I can sell this movie,” Liman said after the world premiere of his first documentary. Frustrated during the Q&A, the documentary revisits Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in 2018. The film follows up hints that the FBI apparently ignored in the investigation launched after Dr. Christine Blasey Ford accused Kavanaugh of assaulting her at a party in 1982, when they were both high school students in Maryland.

The documentary, which has been kept under wraps, was only announced a day earlier as part of the lineup during the opening press conference.

Perhaps the most explosive revelation in the film was the FBI’s failure to follow up on a tip from Max Steele, a Yale classmate during Ramirez’s and Kavanaugh’s school days, who said he was told about an incident involving Kavanaugh exposing himself. Similar incident to another female student. The film includes Steele’s taped statement, one of 4,500 tips to the FBI whistleblowing hotline set up after Ramirez and Blasey Ford came forward.

Liman said the filmmakers have not received any pushback, but he does feel there is a risk of retaliation against the filmmakers and those interviewed in the film, while justice is in production, so requires extreme secrecy, which extends to requiring everyone involved in the film to sign a non-disclosure agreement.

“A machine set up for anyone who dares to speak up … we knew the machine would turn against us,” Liman said. “The movie won’t be showing at Sundance, there will be a ban,” if word leaks ahead of time.

Producer Amy Herdy also investigated other high-profile figures accused of sexual misconduct during the Q&A session, including Woody Allen in the 2021 docu-series Allen v. Blasey Ford makes a brief appearance in the first few minutes of the film. Excerpts from her dramatic testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee tell her story. Liman said he didn’t include the new camera interview with Blasey Ford because “she did her part. She did her part for this country. She’s done it 10 lifetimes.”

It was at the Sundance Film Festival’s Opening Day press conference that the festival’s program directors revealed the film’s existence and its Friday night premiere.

“It shouldn’t be this difficult to have an open and honest conversation about whether a Supreme Court justice beat countless women in his youth,” Liman said in a statement after the festival’s news conference. Brave people who trust us with their stories, justice Picking up where the FBI’s investigation of Brett Kavanaugh was woefully inadequate. The film examines our judicial process and the institutions behind it, highlighting the bureaucratic failures and political power grabs that continue to have a huge impact on our nation today. “

President Trump nominated Kavanaugh in July 2018 to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy. The Senate Judiciary Committee held Kavanaugh’s initial confirmation hearings from Sept. 4-7. On Sept. 16, The Washington Post published a blockbuster report that Blasey Ford accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her in Bethesda, Maryland, in 1982. Sexual assault, when they were teenagers.

In an excerpt of FBI Director Christopher Wray’s testimony that appears in the film, the G-man admitted that intelligence on Kavanaugh had been shared with the Trump White House. At the end of the film, Vice President Mike Pence announced that the Senate had confirmed Kavanaugh’s lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court by a 50-48 vote.

Kavanaugh declined to comment on the filmmakers, the document noted. He has categorically denied all allegations.

One of Kavanaugh’s most significant decisions since joining the court was his vote last year to overturn the court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade case that legalized abortion. He made the 6-3 decision with other conservatives, including Amy Coney Barrett, who was confirmed in 2020.
