UAE President declares 2023 ‘Year of Sustainability’ ahead of COP28

[ad_1]

United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed declares 2023 the country’s “Year of Sustainable Development” COP28 climate summit.

In an online post, the UAE president said that by hosting COP28 – which aims to reduce emissions that cause global warming and combat the consequences of climate change in line with the 2015 Paris Agreement – the UAE will continue to support innovation in the field of sustainable development.

“2023 is the Year of Sustainability in the UAE,” Sheikh Mohamed said. “Effective climate action requires a shared vision and collective will.”

“As host of COP28, we are committed to fulfilling our role as a global convener and will continue to support action and innovation in the field of sustainable development.”

Dr. Sultan al-Jaber, COP28 Chair-designate and UAE Special Envoy on Climate Change, said on Friday that the declaration reflects the UAE’s commitment to promoting sustainable development.

“The UAE has long insisted that the principles of sustainability must be embedded in every sector of the economy,” he said in a statement.

“The country’s commitment to sustainable development, led by its founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, remains a guiding light for the current leadership.”

The “Year of Sustainability” will culminate at COP28, the annual successor to last year’s COP27 in Egypt, which will be held at Dubai Expo City from 30 November to 12 December.

Earlier this month, Dr al-Jaber said this year’s talks must be a “COP for action”, saying the world was “off track” in meeting climate goals set out in the 2015 Paris Agreement.

In his first speech since being named head of this year’s climate talks, al-Jaber said COP28 must be an inclusive, action-oriented approach to transforming the system and accelerating the trajectory to tackle climate change

Dr al-Jaber cited the UAE President’s vision as contributing to the country’s regional and global leadership on climate action and its role as a global advocate for clean energy.

“Over the past 15 years, the UAE has invested US$50 billion globally in renewable energy and clean technologies and plans to invest another US$50 billion in the coming years.”

“We want COP28 to transform the system and accelerate the trajectory to 2030 through game-changing partnerships, solutions and outcomes. We want it to be a united Conference of the Parties, linking the global North and South, including the public and private sectors, scientists and civil society society, women and youth.”
