[ad_1]

ABU DHABI, 20th January, 2023 (WAM) — The Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi, EAD, participated in the Youth 4 Sustainability (Y4S) event held during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, ADSW, Abu Dhabi A series of conferences at the National Exhibition Center (ADNEC) from 14-19 January 2023.

On 16 January, EAD participated in the “World Climate Modeling” conference – a group role-playing exercise focused on international climate change negotiations. The session allowed participants to explore the risks of climate change and the challenges of negotiating international agreements to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

In a live, face-to-face setting, participants take on the role of negotiators representing blocs of countries and regions that must work together to craft an agreement to limit climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Proposals were tested using a climate policy simulation model that provided participants with science-based feedback on the impact of their proposals on atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations, global average surface temperature, sea level rise and other impacts.

Facilitators of the event include the EAD Youth Committee, the Office of the UAE Special Envoy for Climate Change and the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy.

Another session at ADSW was ‘Blue Carbon Habitats and Nature-Based Solutions’, which featured an expert from EAD. The conversation saw Maitha Al Hameli, Divisional Manager, Marine Assessment and Conservation Team, EAD’s Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity Unit, and Jane Glavan, co-owner of Distant Imagery.

Moderated by a member of the EAD Youth Committee, the panel discussion explored nature-based solutions, how they are being applied in the UAE, and why blue carbon is one of the most important and effective nature-based solutions to combat climate change.

The session also highlighted how mangroves play a key role in mitigating the effects of climate change, and delved into how technology and innovation can be used to enhance, protect, preserve and restore blue carbon habitats in the UAE and internationally.

Discussions also serve to introduce young people to the concept of nature-based solutions, new approaches to conservation work, and ways to enhance their work through cutting-edge and modern technology.

The third session on 17 January entitled “EAD Survey 2022: Capturing Youth Voices on Climate Change” – moderated by Khansa Al Blouki, Director of Environmental Outreach, Environmental Information, Science and Outreach Management at EAD, who shared Highlights from EAD The UAE’s largest-ever youth survey on climate change will be conducted in the second half of 2022.

During the meeting, she presented the results of the survey, which involved 4,210 schoolchildren and employees from various emirates. Most participants (about 74%) believe that climate change will affect their daily lives.

Ahmed Baharoon, Executive Director, Environmental Information, EAD Science Extension Management, said: “Youth are one of EAD’s key stakeholders as they are the leaders of tomorrow. We continually prepare them to take the lead and become Proactive change advocates who recognize the importance of protecting the environment and managing our natural resources sustainably and efficiently.

“It is for these reasons that we are eager to participate and be an integral part of the Youth 4 Sustainability event at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.”
