The UAE has strongly condemned an extremist who burned the Koran in front of the Republic of Turkey’s embassy in Sweden.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MoFAIC) affirmed that the UAE rejects all practices aimed at undermining security and stability and contrary to human and moral values and principles.

The ministry reiterated its long-standing call to abandon hate speech and violence, stressing the need to respect religious symbols and avoid inciting hatred by insulting religions. Furthermore, the Ministry reiterated the need to spread the values of tolerance and coexistence.

Meanwhile, Turkey on Saturday canceled a planned visit by Sweden’s defense minister in response to anti-Turkish protests, raising tensions between the two countries as Sweden seeks Turkey’s approval to join NATO.

A far-right activist from Denmark has been given police permission to stage a protest outside the Turkish embassy in Stockholm, where he burned a copy of the Koran.

Another demonstration in support of the Kurds was held in the Swedish capital later on Saturday.

Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said a visit by his Swedish counterpart PÃ¥l Jonson, scheduled for January 27, no longer had “any importance or significance” as Sweden continued to allow “disgusting” demonstrations against Turkey .

Johnson said on Twitter that he met Akar on Friday in Ramstein, Germany, where they “agreed to postpone” their meeting in Ankara.

“The relationship with Turkey is very important to Sweden and we look forward to continuing the dialogue on shared security and defense issues in the future,” he wrote.
