Shubhankar tied for seventh at Abu Dhabi golf; Frenchman Perez wins

[ad_1]

India’s Shubanka Sharma shot a 13-under 69 on the final day to tie for seventh at the HSBC Championship in Abu Dhabi here on Sunday. Sharma fired the first six holes, making two birdies and an eagle, and took another close look. He lost momentum on the seventh hole, missed a short two-and-a-half-foot birdie and bogeyed the eighth. But he persevered and eventually birdied for a 69.

Summing up the week, Sharma, who finished second in Abu Dhabi last year, said, “So, all in all, four good days…top 10.” Will go again next week. This gave me a lot of confidence. It’s the first game of the season and I know all the mistakes I made this week. For next week, that’s a good baseline to build on for the rest of the season. I’m glad I’m consistent. Frenchman Victor Perez scored three-and-a-half points from two quarters in last week’s Copa Heroes to claim the title in dramatic form.

Leading by two shots from the 18th tee, Perez struggled on the par-5 18th hole as he lingered in danger and made bogey. Minutes later, group leader Min Woo Lee of Australia almost holed out on his third, an eagle that would have sent him into a playoff with Perez.

Perez finished the round with a 4-under 68 for an 18-under total, while Lee tied with Swede Sebastian Swede at 17 under. Ann Soderbergh (67) tied for second.

Sharma, who is highly sought after by a large number of Indian fans, birdied the first hole, but hit a wonderful second shot within three feet of the second hole, which was his only eagle of the week. He then followed up with an excellent second shot over the next few holes, which had been somewhat uncertain a day earlier. He was rewarded with birdies on the fifth and sixth holes.

Then came the blip that could change the course of his game. He missed a two-and-a-half-foot birdie putt after a brilliant third shot out of the bunker. Then he dropped a shot on the eighth hole because he left himself too long with a par putt.

Summing up his round, Sharma said: “It was an up and down round. Obviously the eagle on the second hole and the two birdies on the fifth and sixth. What changed the momentum for me was On the seventh hole, I made two and a half putts from left to right for birdie. I had a shadow on the putt. Then a bogey on the eighth hole.” He added, “Those two holes changed Momentum, and a poor tee shot on the 11th was the worst shot of the week. The back nine was not easy, it was very windy.” ”I’m still glad I made it through the 13th hole. I was on the 13th A good birdie on the 16th, a bogey there, but gave himself a good chance on the 17th and a good birdie on the 18th .”Perez won in dramatic fashion. Leading by two shots on one stage, he stared down a possible bogey from a bunker on the 17th hole. Then he pulled down a stunner.

“It’s actually not as difficult as a bunker shot because it’s downhill to the hole, it’s flat and upwind at the hole. I’m trying to hit it all the way to the hole.
