In addition to losing the $2,700 dispute, the passenger also had to pay the unnamed airline’s legal fees.

a nameless United Arab Emirates Carrier avoids AED10,000 ($2,700) compensation for allegedly supplying shoddy children’s toys that damaged passengers passport.

small dispute

A passenger is suing the carrier for damaging his child’s passport by distributing Disney-themed passport covers during boarding, local media reported.

The promotional gifts were allegedly of low quality, resulting in the passport being severely damaged upon return to the country, causing economic loss to the plaintiff, who was required to replace the damaged item.

After a brief trial, the judge ruled in the carrier’s favour. The case was dismissed on the grounds that the plaintiff did not adequately protect his official documents and allowed the potentially damaging adhesive to be affixed to his children’s passports. Passengers are required to pay the airline’s legal fees.

damaged passport problem

Is a damaged passport causing trouble for your travels? While “reasonable wear and tear” seems to be the norm for most passport issuers, some holidaymakers have found their ID documents in poor condition and been prevented from traveling.

In 2019, a passenger was kicked off the plane Qatar Airways Flights between London Heathrow Airport (length width height) and Doha (There) because the laminate covering the personal details page was damaged, raising concerns that identification could have been altered.

Likewise, another passenger was prevented from traveling to Aruba on a TUI service (don’t want) at London Gatwick Airport (LGW) due to a small tear on the page next to his photo. Despite being aware of the tear, the passenger had checked online before travel and deemed the damage to be general wear and tear before being sent home at the gate.

To ensure you don’t become a tabloid travel horror story, the UK Home Office advises passengers to replace their passports after any moderate damage.

If your passport wears beyond reasonable limits, you must replace it as you may not be permitted to travel with it,” Government agencies issued warnings.

Damage guidelines include substandard details, laminate shifted enough to replace the image, severe discoloration, missing or torn pages, and wear and tear on the last page of the new ePassport.

Holidaymakers can travel until their passports expire as long as wear or tear is kept to a minimum. However, replacement products will incur a renewal fee of £75.50 ($92) in the UK and up to $165 in the US. A reissuance application is similar to a passport renewal application and requires a countersign to confirm your identity. For more details, please visit UK government website.
