Axl Rose is still ‘shocked’ by Lisa Marie Presley’s death.
When the 60-year-old Guns N’ Roses frontman appeared at Graceland’s Lifetime Service Celebration on Sunday (Jan. 22, 2023), he never expected to ask the former A tribute to the old singer when he also performed his hit song ‘November Rain’.
He told mourners: “I’m still in shock because I feel like I’m going to last a long time. I feel like I should be texting her like I’m doing now.”
Axl added that he was not going to talk about Lisa Marie – who died on January 12 at the age of 54 after two heart attacks – and said he felt “tongue tied and tense” for “a million years” It never occurred to him that he would be delivering a eulogy to his friend.
He continued: “It’s really devastating and I’m sure everyone here is devastated…I know Lisa loves her family very much and is fiercely protective of her father and his legacy.”
Axl performed “November Rain” after the speech, and singers including Billy Corgan and Alanis Morissette also played at the ceremony.
The Guns N’ Roses frontman spoke last week about his efforts to comfort Elvis Presley after her only son, Benjamin Keough, died by suicide in 2020 at the age of 27.
He told PEOPLE: “I will miss my friend Lisa. Her passing, like her son’s, or, as a child, her father’s, doesn’t seem real.
“Lisa loves her family and all her children. My heart goes out to them.
“Her son’s death is shocking, tragic and devastating. At some point you obviously don’t want to bring it up, but embarrassingly let her know you care and think of her, of them, and try to be as comforting as you can She, she appreciates it.”
Axl added that after Benjamin’s suicide, he and Lisa would exchange messages filled with jokes, news articles and “lots of animal videos” trying to cheer her up, and he tried to let her know “was thinking about her, them, and Hope the best for her.”
Axl wishes mom of four Lisa Marie to be with her son and Elvis in the afterlife, adding: “I want her to be happy and feel good about things, at least in this situation as much as possible. Really, with As close as they are, one could hope – but honestly, that doesn’t seem like a plausible reality, at least not after some real time has passed.
“Who knows what happens after that life, but I want them to be together, she and Ben with her father and Ben’s grandfather in a way, and Lisa, with the most important man in her life hapiness.
“I was lucky enough to hear firsthand about her dad and her experiences and memories with him. She came to the show and we hung out backstage. “It was always a pleasure to see her, she was always fun and super supportive. “
