New Delhi: A Delhi court on Sunday remanded a man accused of staying in a local five-star hotel for about four months, posing as a member of the UAE royal family and fleeing with unpaid bills of more than 2.3 lakh in two days. Police custody.

Duty magistrate Shivangi Vyas sent Mahamed Sharif for custodial questioning, noting that police had to retrieve certain items allegedly stolen from him from his residence in Delhi.

Sharif checked into The Leela Palace Hotel on 1 August last year. Police told the court he lived in room 427 for about four months and fled on November 20 with valuables from the hotel but failed to pay the bill.

“Considering that the recovery of the property of the case – the stolen items – has not yet taken effect, the accused Mohammad Sharif will be remanded by the police for two days,” the judge said.

The defendants posed as members of the UAE royal family to book hotel rooms at discounted rates.

He was arrested from Puttur in Karnataka state on January 19 and detained for four days at a court in the southern state.

Defense lawyers for the defendant objected to the police remand request, saying the defendant was arrested illegally and nothing was stolen.

Apart from defrauding the hotel of Rs 2.346 lakh, he fled with valuables including a silver bottle holder, according to the police.

Police said the defendant registered at the hotel as a key official of the UAE government’s “Office of His Highness Sheikh Farah bin Zayed Al Nahyan” and provided a fake business card.

It claimed that the accused also provided a UAE resident card upon arrival at the hotel.
