They said they chose Abu Dhabi because it was the best value for money offered by the tour company they wanted to use.
They said the price has not yet been finalized.
In a letter from the school’s sports department, which was also shared on the school’s Twitter account, it read: “We are writing to inform you that the sports department is arranging a trip to Dubai from October 24 to 31. and a sports trip to Abu Dhabi, 2024.
“Our aim is to play rugby, football, netball and cricket on the tour. The tour costs £2,300-£2,550 (maximum) depending on the proposed itinerary of the tour company/package purchased.
“We will be offering this trip to students in Years 9, 10 and 11. Only students who are registered at Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr in October 2024 will be able to take part in this trip.
“We are very eager to ensure that this opportunity is available to every right student.”

The parent of a ninth grader said they were enthusiastic about the trip before hearing the price.
They said: “It all sounds great until you find out the trip will cost the parents £2,500.
“The best part is that it’s in Abu Dhabi – how on earth can they say this trip is for all students? Why spend this money to go to Abu Dhabi?”
The parent said while everyone was feeling the effects of the cost of living crisis, they were even more disappointed with the prices.
They said they had spoken to several other parents of their children in ninth grade who all seemed to share the same opinion and shared their disappointment.
Some parents say it’s time to end costly overseas school trips that leave children from struggling families missing out.
One of them, Donna Michelle Evans, described its cost as “absolutely ridiculous”.
Another – Pat Paul O’Leary – said: “That’s going to be a big fat one, I don’t like my kids missing out, but you’ve got to draw a line somewhere, the money could go towards a family holiday or buy a car A new car that we can all enjoy, and I wonder what the teachers are going to pay for it.”

A school spokesman said: “The cost of optional sports trips during the school holidays, which will be open to students in Years 9, 10 and 11, has not yet been finalized and is something we are discussing with parents.
“Cost is our number one concern, especially at this time, we are working with a company that we have worked with very successfully in the past.
“We discounted other destinations like Canada and South Africa because the estimated cost was much higher.
“We haven’t done a trip like this since the pandemic started, but we have had several parents contact us to ask them to come back, so the school is offering this sports trip.
“If there isn’t enough interest, the sports tour won’t take place.”
