Three years after being torn apart at the moment of auction, a painting of a young girl holding a red heart balloon by the elusive British artist Banksy will be re-sold for as much as US$8 million next month.
After a bid of £1,042,000 at the Sotheby’s auction in London in October 2018, after the lower part of the then-named “Girl with Balloons” was sucked into the paper shredder hidden in the frame, onlookers took a breath .
Buyers continue to buy and artwork, because it is certified as a work and renamed “Love in the Trash Can”, and is being sold for 4 to 6 million pounds (US$5.54 million to US$8.31 million).
“Obviously, it has risen nearly four times since the last time. But I think that during this period, Banksy’s business market has also grown exponentially,” Sotheby’s European Chairman Oliver Buck told Reuters.
“It is difficult to find any artist’s work. This is not only the true symbol of that artist, but it is actually a symbol of the art world itself.”
In March of this year, a painting by Banksy depicting a boy playing a superhero played by a toy nurse was sold for more than $20 million, setting an auction record for the artist.
“Love is in the Bin” will be exhibited at Sotheby’s in London, then travel to Hong Kong, Taipei and New York, and return to the British capital to participate in the auction on October 14.
