Qatar hopes to build Afghanistan airport assistance corridor within 48 hours-News

Qatari technicians in Kabul inspect security and operational aspects related to the airport

Doha’s special envoy to Afghanistan told Al Jazeera on Friday that Qatar hopes to establish a humanitarian aid corridor at Afghanistan’s airport within 48 hours.

In cooperation with the Taliban, Qatar quickly reopened the Kabul Airport. Since the withdrawal of US troops, the closure of the airport has threatened major strategic and humanitarian challenges.

“We hope to see the opening of the humanitarian corridor in the next 24 or 48 hours so that humanitarian aid can enter through Kabul Airport and other functioning airports,” Mutlaq Al Qahtani told Qatar Channel from Afghanistan.

A jet plane from the Gulf countries was the first foreign plane to land in the Afghan capital on Wednesday, because the frantic evacuation activities ended with the U.S. withdrawal the day before.

According to a source close to the matter, a flight from Doha landed in Kabul on Thursday, and the experts on board will check the safety and operational issues related to the airport.

“Qatar technicians have made tremendous efforts in the past 48 hours, and these efforts are still going on,” Qahtani added.

Doha is a major transit point for Afghan refugees, and it said it is working to quickly resume operations.

In terms of humanitarian assistance, Joseph Borrell, the head of EU foreign policy, said on Friday that the EU will seek to strengthen its assistance to the Afghan people, but will judge the authorities “based on the access they provide.”
