An Abu Dhabi court has awarded Dh250,000 in damages to a worker who was seriously injured when a heavy pump fell while on duty. The worker was repairing a water pump when the accident occurred and he suffered multiple fractures to his spine and ribs.
The man filed a lawsuit against the boss of the company that employed him, seeking Dh500,000 in compensation for the physical, mental and material damage he suffered as a result of the incident, official court documents said.
The plaintiff alleges that he was on duty at a workshop owned by the defendant to repair the pump when it fell on him. In his lawsuit, the worker said he suffered multiple fractures to his spine and back ribs.
The investigation confirmed that the accident was caused by the company’s negligence and lack of safety measures to protect workers.
The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court earlier convicted the company owner of negligence and disregarding security measures. The company boss was fined Dh10,000 and ordered to pay Dh60,000 interim compensation to the workers.
The worker then filed a civil lawsuit against the company’s boss, seeking damages.
The man said the injuries had affected him so badly that he was no longer able to hold any work for extended periods of time, but he was the sole breadwinner in his family.
The Abu Dhabi Civil Court of First Instance had earlier directed the company owner to pay the workers Dh250,000 as compensation.
The employer challenged the decision of the appeals court, which upheld the lower court’s decision.
The company owner will also pay the worker’s legal fees.
