Abu Dhabi: First AI students graduate; 52 students from 24 countries earn degrees – News

The inaugural graduation ceremony of the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), the world’s first AI graduate research university, saw 52 students from 24 countries, including eight Emirati, who achieved computer vision and a graduate degree in machine learning.

15% of UAE graduates represent the largest single nationality, followed by India, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Morocco, Nigeria, Russia, Canada and Egypt.

Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of the Board of Directors of MBZUAI, said: “You have the capacity, knowledge and skills to unite a divided world and provide the solutions the world needs today.”

The event was attended by Sheikh Theab bin Zayed Al Nahyan, French Minister of Economy and Finance, Bruno Le Maire; Omar bin Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications; Minister of State for Public Education and Advanced Technologies and Sarah Al Amiri, Chairperson, UAE Schools Agency; Professor Eric Xing, Chairperson, MBZUAI. During a ceremony at the ADNOC Business Centre, Sheikh Theyab handed over the certificates to the graduates, who were cheered by other staff, parents, friends and relatives.

Dr Al Jaber is “proud” and “optimistic” about graduates’ career choices.

“The career path you choose will change the course of humanity.”

The minister noted that artificial intelligence will change every aspect of human life.

“When MBZUAI was founded by our leadership in 2019, its mission was clear: to harness the power of artificial intelligence to drive global progress. The pursuit of progress is at the heart of the UAE’s principles, values ​​and identity. We stand on the brink of a technological revolution, This will be unlike anything we’ve experienced before.”

Dr Al Jaber said MBZUAI was at the forefront of the “next step”.

“MBZUAI is specifically designed to facilitate research across multiple sectors, including business, IT, energy, transport, education and healthcare, and sustainable development – and you, MBZUAI’s inaugural graduates, will be the pioneers in helping to turn research into reality .”

Artificial intelligence will reshape the relationship between humans and machines, says the UAE chair-designate of COP28.

“When you step out of the classroom, you step into a very special year. This year is very special for the UAE and the world. 2023 is the year of sustainable development in the UAE, and it is also a year when the UAE will host the COP28 UAE climate conference. year.”

Emphasizing the importance of AI skills in tackling the global climate challenge, he said: “We need to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees without slowing economic growth. At the same time, we need to keep our planet Wealthier and healthier. I have no doubt that you, MBZUAI’s first graduates, hold some of the keys to the transformational breakthroughs our world needs today.”

Dr. Al Jaber noted that artificial intelligence will play a key role in enabling breakthroughs for human, climate and economic progress.

“You will be graduating from the right institution, at the right time, with the right degree and at the cutting edge of the future. With 44 nationalities and over a third of women, your class is incredibly diverse. I know you will serve the UAE and the world made a significant contribution to the attention and development of

The Minister concluded by urging students to focus on facts, science, results, deliver and make a positive contribution.

“Remember, progress is driven by curiosity, constructive dialogue, connectedness, hard work, patience and impatience. So, for the sake of human progress, get out there, be impatient, and make an impact,” said Dr. Al Jaber. “Aim for the stars.”

Bruno Le Maire pointed out that artificial intelligence is a key technology for France and the UAE to cooperate in the next decade.

“France and the UAE have a long and strong diplomatic relationship built on strong strategic, cultural, commercial and economic ties, a relationship that will continue to grow in the coming decades as our two countries continue to find ways to leverage technology will become even closer. The progress of our country.”

Professor Xing added: “We are eager for our graduates to further push the boundaries of knowledge and technology, and use the knowledge they have gained from the university to serve society.”
