Mumbai: Sahar police on Monday arrested Paola Perruccio, a 45-year-old woman from Italy, after she caused a commotion on a flight from Abu Dhabi to Mumbai. The woman allegedly insisted on sitting in business class despite having an economy class ticket, assaulted the crew when she was stopped, and then took off part of her clothes and walked up and down the aisle half-naked.

Police received complaints from the crew of Vistara Airlines flight 256 after it landed in Mumbai in the early hours of Monday morning. The flight took off from Abu Dhabi at 2.03am on Monday.

A police officer at the Sahar Police Station described what happened: “Around 2:30 in the morning, the woman sitting in the economy class suddenly got up and ran to sit in the business class. Help. When the flyers did not respond, they asked her to return to her assigned seat. At this point, she began yelling at them and making aggressive gestures, leading the crew to suspect that she was abusing them.”

When the crew tried to stop the woman from misbehaving, she allegedly punched one in the face and spat on another. Shortly after, the woman began stripping as other crew members rushed to help the stunned colleague.

“To the horror of the crew and other passengers, the woman began walking up and down the aisle naked. The commotion continued for a long time before the woman was subdued and restrained,” the official said .

Finally, when the flight landed at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport at around 4.53am, the leaflet was handed over to Air Vistara’s security officers and then to Sahar police.

Following an initial investigation, police opened a case on Monday afternoon against Perruccio, who was born in Sondrio, Italy, according to her passport details.

“Under the Aircraft Rules 1937, the accused was charged with assault, other acts of disturbing the crew and conduct endangering safety or endangering good order and discipline, and assault, reckless and negligent conduct under the relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code. She was Taken to court and released on bail later in the day,” the officer said.

In response to HT’s inquiries, a Vistara spokesperson confirmed the incident on board. “In light of the continued unruly behavior and violence, the captain issued a warning card and decided to restrict customers,” the spokesman said. The pilot also makes periodic bulletins to ensure the safety of other pilots. “In accordance with guidelines and our strict standard operating procedure (SOP), local security agencies were told to take immediate action upon arrival.”
