Prayut received 264 votes in favor and 208 against on Saturday. Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and four other cabinet ministers also survived the condemnation motion in a similar manner.
Opposition parties need 242 out of 482 votes in parliament to remove the prime minister.
Prayut said he remained confident after voting.
Legislators for more than four days accused his government of improper handling of the pandemic and criticized him for causing serious economic impact. In response to the government’s failure to place vaccine orders in advance, the vaccine launch was slow and decided not to join the international COVAX vaccine supply plan.
Prayut insisted on these decisions.
This is the third surviving motion of condemnation by the government. At the same time, democratic protesters plan to hold more demonstrations on Saturday.
Recent rallies have become violent, with security forces using tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets against protesters who threw rocks and firecrackers.
Thailand has reported more than 1.2 million infections and nearly 12,000 coronavirus-related deaths, most of which have been caused by the Delta variant since April.
The authorities reported that the single-day increase in cases was the largest in mid-August, exceeding 23,000.
During the worst outbreak in the country, the introduction of the vaccine began in June, people were unable to seek medical treatment and some died at home. Approximately 13% of Thailand’s more than 66 million people are fully vaccinated.
The government lowered its economic growth forecast for 2021 for the third time, from 1.5-2.5% to 0.7-1.2%. The economy shrank by 6.1% last year.
