Abu Dhabi: 17% of drivers ignore school bus “stop” sign rules-News

A new online survey shows that 17% of motorists in Abu Dhabi will not stop when they display a “stop” sign for school buses to pick up and drop off passengers.

The Safety Media Department of the Abu Dhabi Police recently conducted a public opinion survey on social media about the dangerous behaviors of some drivers, which pose a daily threat to the safety of students who use school buses.

Brigadier General Mohamed Ali Al Muhari, Director of the Safety Media Department of the Driving Affairs Department, said that ignoring the “stop” signs on school buses by some drivers is a very reckless behavior that puts the lives of students in danger.

He said: “I urge drivers to observe the traffic rules related to school buses to protect the lives of students,” he added, adding that drivers who violate the rules will not be tolerated.

Al Muhairi pointed out that when the “stop” sign is displayed, police drivers should stop in both directions on a two-way road 5 meters away from the school bus.

Drivers who ignore the school bus “stop” sign will be fined 1,000 dirhams and 10 black dots will be recorded on their driver’s license.

The school bus driver must also display a “stop” sign on the school bus when picking up students.

The fine for not displaying the “stop” sign on the school bus is Dh500 and six black dots.

School bus drivers are also reminded to park at designated safe places to give students the opportunity to get on the bus and sit in their seats safely, ensuring that they get off the school bus safely when they arrive at the school.
