Job Overview
KU is seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant – Pathology Works under the general supervision and direction of line managers. Research Assistant – Pathology is expected to provide support services by performing technical work in research-related laboratories, maintaining adequate laboratory supplies, ensuring all equipment is in working order, and coordinating with partner hospitals/laboratories on quarantine retrieval, growth, Stored for liaison and shipped to KU for research use. The position holder is expected to spend time at partner hospitals and laboratories in support of research objectives and assist with clinical separation and data selection and retrieval for research use, and perform related duties as required.
The role requires individuals to undertake responsibilities that require substantial technical knowledge and competence in a designated area of ​​expertise. Knowledge and experience of working in a Microbiology BSL2 laboratory is essential (BSL3 experience would be advantageous). Knowledge and experience working with large clinical data sets and using excel will be absolutely essential. The incumbent is expected to exercise independent judgment in the performance of his duties and will be responsible for ensuring a safe work environment, maintaining an adequate stock of all laboratory supplies, ensuring that equipment is in working condition, and ensuring that adequate records of collected isolates are kept to the highest standard .
Job Requirements
- Ensuring a safe working laboratory environment at Khalifa University CMHS.
- Responsible for research laboratory and data retrieval goals and milestones
- Flexibility to work across CMHS labs and partner hospitals/labs
- Ensures that inventories, orders, receiving and stocking materials, supplies and equipment used in the laboratory are maintained.
- Keeping records of isolates collected, used and stored as part of research
- Work with the data team to retrieve the required clinical data associated with each isolate collected as part of the ongoing study
- Responsible for maintaining retrieved clinical datasets collected in research studies
- Assist in maintaining the safety of the laboratory, laboratory equipment, supplies and materials
- Prepare all reagents and media needed for microbiological analysis
- Prepare stains, solutions, and preservatives by mixing, bottling, and labeling as required by the study.
- Prepare all necessary necessary steps and procedures and follow protocols for all analytical equipment used to analyze study isolates
- Order, receive and provide storage services for cryopreserved isolates.
- Ensure a sterile and sterile environment for microbiological work by cleaning each laboratory with cleaning and, if necessary, sanitizing tools, equipment, and supplies at the end of each day.
- Scientific equipment and supplies will need to be calibrated, maintained and repaired as needed.
- Maintain a calibration log of all pipettes used as part of the study
- Maintain and maintain a laboratory book detailing experiments and preliminary results on all working isolates
- Monitor the production, collection and disposal of hazardous waste and toxic chemicals from experimental work, and collect and properly store/dispose of biohazardous waste.
- Comply with the University’s information security and confidentiality policies and procedures and report breaches or other security risks accordingly.
- Coordinates with other department, hospital and collaborating laboratory staff as needed to facilitate completion of tasks and responsibilities.
- Perform any other tasks assigned by Line Manager.

- Possess at least a master’s degree in a related field (e.g. biomedical sciences) or an education/experience combination equivalent to the designated area of ​​specialization for the position.
- Microbiology qualification and demonstrable experience are preferred
- A first aid certificate is mandatory. This can be done after assuming this role.

This role requires at least 4-5 years of relevant experience in the field of microbiology. Successful applicants must also have experience with:
- BSL2 microbiology experience is essential
- Ability to troubleshoot basic hardware/software issues. Experience with statistical software packages (i.e. SPSS) is a plus.
- Experience with Microsoft Excel is essential
- Work in a team – Collaborate with others to maximize individual and team efficiency to achieve the desired service level.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to demonstrate independent initiative.
- Good written and oral communication and reporting skills.
- Learn quickly and respond effectively to changing operational needs and circumstances.
- Solve everyday experimental problems by quickly identifying possible corrective actions and recommending/selecting the best solution.

- Experience with health-related learning technologies and/or simulations.
