The UAE has launched a national drug tracking system called ‘Tatmeen’, the first platform in the region to track and trace medicines.

The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP), the Abu Dhabi Department of Health (DoH) and the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) have launched an advanced track and trace platform during Arab Health 2023, and the three entities are participating in a joint initiative called Emirates Health” platform.

The system has achieved impressive results even before its launch, as the platform tracked and traced nearly 1.2 million pharmaceutical parcels across the UAE. With this innovative system, the UAE is taking an important step towards ensuring the immunity and safety of its medical supply chain.

strengthened drug control

This state-of-the-art platform will significantly enhance control over all pharmaceuticals circulating in the country by creating a seamless electronic network linking federal and local authorities, factories, distributors, pharmacies and consumers. This will allow vigilant monitoring and tracking of medicines, in line with national health plans to build a world-class medicines safety system. The platform will also help position the UAE as a recognized innovator in global drug supply security.

The “Tatmeen” platform provides modern electronic tracking services for pharmaceuticals and medical products, and is developed in cooperation with some major technology entities to improve the reliability of pharmaceutical supply chains.

Digital Transformation of Health Services

Ahmed Ali Al Dashti, Assistant Undersecretary for Support Services, said the platform is a top-tier national health project developed as part of the ministry’s ongoing digital transformation efforts. It also complies with the government’s directive to digitize vital services and improve the quality and speed of service delivery. “The Tatmeen platform represents a major change in the healthcare industry, incorporating cutting-edge technology and advanced equipment,”

Al Dashti added: “The platform provides comprehensive health and drug services to the public and enables tracking of medicines through the entire supply chain on a single digital platform. This will certainly make health and drug services more accessible and efficient for society, thereby benefiting society,”

convenience and transparency

Ali Al Ajmi, director of MoHAP’s Digital Health Department, said Tatmeen is an ideal example of the future-proofing measures taken by the health authority to guarantee the quality and reliability of locally manufactured and imported medicines. “The platform adheres to the cutting-edge GS1 digital sequencing standards, increasing transparency and trust in the pharmaceutical industry,”

Al Ajmi added that with cutting-edge digital sequencing technology, Tatmeen can track every step of the medicine from its origin to its expiration date by simply scanning the serial number.

Accessible through its website or smart app, this joint digital platform provides convenience and transparency to the pharmaceutical industry.

More than 3,500 dedicated employees work tirelessly to protect the medical supply chain while adhering to the highest health and safety standards. The platform also provided training to 1,200 people to join the Tatmeen team, having completed 250 hours of training over the past two years. In addition, the platform has attracted 1,760 partners, ready to collaborate and take advantage of it.

Launched in 2020, the platform marks a major milestone in the government’s efforts to digitize important programs and improve the quality of healthcare services. With its advanced technology and commitment to safety, the platform provides trusted drug information to ensure the safe use of medical and pharmaceutical products.
