The UAE Gender Balance Council (GBC) discussed new ways to work with the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5), which focuses on empowering girls and women globally.
Mona Ghanem Al Marri, Vice-President of the GBC and Chair of the Fifth UN Sustainable Development Goals Global Council, met with Martin Chungong, Secretary-General of the IPU and member of the Fifth United Nations Global Council for Sustainable Development Goals, to discuss their commitment to promoting gender balance. The two parties agreed on a joint plan focused on government and parliament.
The meeting was a GBC World Government Summit Participation and Event under the patronage of Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of the UAE Gender Balance Council, Chairperson of Dubai Women’s Institution and wife of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Part of Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Presidency.
Al Marri commended Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed’s support for the Global Council’s 5th UN Sustainable Development Goal and the IPU’s cooperation and support for the Global Council’s initiative. One of the key achievements of the 5th UN Sustainable Development Goals Global Council was the development of the Global Gender Balance Advanced Practice Toolkit, which provides guidelines and policies for promoting gender balance and women’s empowerment.
Chungong applauded the UAE’s efforts to improve women’s empowerment and gender balance, which has resulted in the country’s high ranking in the Global Gender Balance Index. The two sides discussed ways to strengthen collaboration to increase women’s participation and organized a virtual global workshop to further discuss the Global Council’s project and conduct joint research on the positive impact of having more women in the region’s parliaments.
The UAE Gender Balance Council is participating in the World Government Summit 2023 to strengthen its global partnerships and enhance the UAE’s position as a leader in gender balance. The Gender Balance Forum and the Women in Government Forum organized during the Summit will bring together thought leaders from around the world to discuss new opportunities to promote gender balance and women’s participation in government.
