Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikha Shamsa Bint Hamdan Al Nahyan, the theme for Abu Dhabi Festival 2023 is “The Will to Evolve”. A busy schedule includes opera performances, flamenco, jazz, orchestral concerts and performances by Oscar-winning composers.

Kicking off March 1, 2023 – Peruvian opera tenor Juan Diego Flórez will host a heroic evening, a 120-minute concert , singing dizzying arias and nostalgic songs from the rich Peruvian and Latin American collective songbook. Flórez’s performance will be supported by his titular “friends” as well as the entire orchestra.
From Scheherazade to Me Carmen
We will premiere in the Middle East on March 10 From Scheherazade to me, Carmen. Legendary flamenco dancer and choreographer MarÃa Pagé delves into the character of Carmen, the gypsy cigarette girl from Merimee’s novella.
Gregory Porter
Two-time Grammy Award-winning jazz musician Gregory Porter will take the stage at the Emirates Palace on March 11. Look forward to live performances of Porter’s original compositions from his hugely popular album, liquid spirit and take me to the alley, and bluesy covers of contemporary classics. Joining Gregory on stage were Chip Crawford on piano, Emanuel Harrold on drums, Tivon Pennicott on saxophone and horn and Jahmal Nichols on bass.
From West to East: A Classic Odyssey
March 17th is reserved for Regional First. Academy Award-winning composer Tan Dun conducts the Orchestra of the Municipal Theater of Modena Pavarotti-Freni, assisted by world-renowned Chinese cellist Wang Jian. The result – from west to east, a sonic journey across musical hemispheres featuring works by Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky, as well as the UAE premiere of Deng’s original Pipa Concerto play.

The second night of the fascinating Tan Dun duo will take place on March 18th. The performance is a 95-minute oratorio that brings to life six sacred allegories of the Buddha, culminating in the story of the Buddha’s ascension to heaven. The performance revolves around the teachings of Buddha and the concepts of love, forgiveness and sacrifice.
