Former judge and freedom fighter Mohammad Shahabuddin Chup will be Bangladesh’s new president, the Chief Election Commission has announced.
Chuppu, 74, was elected unopposed on Monday and will replace President Mohammad Abdul Hamid.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal announced that Chuppu, Awami League Advisory Council member and the party’s nominee, the President-elect of Bangladesh unopposed after scrutinising his nomination papers submitted on Sunday.
With no rivals, he became president by default.

A communiqué on the appointment of the new Bangladesh president by the Chief Election Commissioner was issued on Monday. Chuppu will be the 22nd president of Bangladesh.
The current longest-serving president of Bangladesh, Hamid, whose term ends on April 23, cannot be re-elected for a third term under the constitution.
Senior Awami League leader and seven-time lawmaker Hamid were elected Bangladesh president in the last two elections.

He was sworn in for a second term on 24 April 2018.
Hamid greeted the newly elected president over the phone and wished him success on Monday.
After retiring as a district and session judge, Chuppu served as a member of the Independent Anti-Corruption Commission.
He later entered politics and became a member of the Awami League’s advisory council, which is made up of senior party leaders and technocrats.
However, Chuppu will have to give up his party post to become the nominal head of state.
Born in the Pabna district in the northwest, Chuppu was a leader of the Awami League student and youth organization in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
He also fought in the 1971 Liberation War and was convicted of a military coup against Bangladeshi founder Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (father of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina) on 15 August 1975 with most of his Family members imprisoned for protests after members were assassinated.

The coup also led to the downfall of the Awami League government. In 1982, he was incorporated into the national judiciary.

When the Awami League returned to power in the 1996 elections, Chuppu served as coordinator of the Bangabandhu murder trial.
His wife, Rebeka Sultana, is a former joint secretary to the government.
