Boeing has agreed to purchase 5.6 million gallons (21.2 million liters) of blended Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) produced by Neste, the world’s leading SAF producer, to support its commercial operations in the United States through 2023.
These agreements have more than doubled the company’s SAF purchases compared to last year.
“We’re demonstrating our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and advancing the SAF industry,” said Sheila Remes, Boeing vice president of Environmental Sustainability. “This year’s SAF purchases accounted for 25 percent of Boeing’s total jet fuel requirements last year, including our production, deliveries, Boeing ecoDemonstrator and Dreamlifter flights, and we aim to increase this percentage in the coming years.”
The purchase agreement includes the supply of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation FuelTM, which is blended 30/70 with conventional jet fuel to produce a blended SAF. Neste MY SAF is made from 100% renewable waste and residual raw materials, such as cooking oil and animal fat waste, and meets strict sustainability criteria.
EPIC Fuels and Signature Aviation will provide 2.3 million gallons, and Avfuel will provide 300,000 gallons of the hybrid SAF for Boeing’s ecoDemonstrator flight test program and the company’s commercial sites in Washington state and South Carolina. Boeing has also purchased an additional 3 million gallons of the same blended SAF from EPIC Fuels and Signature Aviation, generating emissions reduction credits for commercial deliveries, Dreamlifter and corporate flights. These benefits are generated through the registration and claims process of substituting SAF for petroleum jet fuel in fueling systems outside the corporate fuel supply.
In 2021, Boeing committed to delivering its commercial aircraft capable and certified to fly with 100% SAF by 2030. SAF reduces CO2 emissions by as much as 80% over the life of the fuel, with the potential to reach 100% in the future, and is widely recognized as offering the greatest potential to decarbonize aviation over the next 20 to 30 years. Made from a variety of feedstocks, SAF is certified for commercial use and can currently be blended with conventional jet fuel by up to 50 percent without requiring modifications to aircraft, engines or fueling infrastructure.
Key milestones for Boeing to achieve SAF include:
• In February 2023, Boeing announced a key testing milestone – the development of a jet reference fluid to enable SAF compatibility testing to help fulfill the company’s commitment to produce 100% SAF capable aircraft.
• In 2019, Boeing began offering customers the option to use SAF to power commercially delivered flights, demonstrating its commitment to reducing CO2 emissions and furthering the use of cleaner fuels.
• In 2018, Boeing ecoDemonstrator partnered with FedEx to conduct the industry’s first commercial aircraft test flight with 100% SAF in both engines of a 777 Freighter.
• Boeing conducted the first test flight of the SAF in 2008, approved the SAF for commercial use in 2011, and cleared the aircraft for delivery in 2012. trade arab news agency
