As future clock ticks, Afghanistan beat UAE in T20 opener

[ad_1]

Afghanistan started what could be the last series before the suspension with a five-goal win over the UAE in the opening game of the three-match T20 series on Thursday.

After the home team took 142 balls from 5 balls, Afghanistan reached the goal by 5 balls.

Karim Janat topped the table with 53 points, his second T20 international in half a century. His runs came from 38 balls, with two fours and three sixes.

Afsar Zazai struck 48 off 40 balls with four boundaries and two sixes.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is under increasing pressure to ban Afghanistan from the game in response to a crackdown on women’s rights by the ruling Taliban.

Australia controversially withdrew from a planned three-match series against Asian teams in January in protest of tough restrictions that included a ban on women from participating in sport in the country.

The ICC will discuss Afghanistan, the only top-flight country without a women’s team, at a meeting in March.

The UAE came up to bat early on Thursday, with captain Chundangapoyil Rizwan hitting 41 off 48 balls.

His innings included two boundaries and two sixes.

Rizwan joined Muhammad Waseem (33) for 75 for the second wicket.

Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan sacked Wasim with two for 34 in his four overs before Basil Hamid scored the ducks in consecutive balls.

The remaining two matches are also played in Abu Dhabi on Saturday and Sunday.
