February 16 (United Press International) — The United Nations on Thursday called for $1 billion in aid for Turkey after devastating earthquakes hit Turkey and Syria this month.

Funding for three months will help more than 5.2 million people affected by disaster in Turkey, UN chief says Anthony Guterres explain in a statement Appeal to Member States.

“Turkey, the country with the largest number of refugees in the world, has shown great generosity to its Syrian neighbors over the years,” Guterres said. “Now is the time for the world to stand by the people of Turkey – just as they are with others seeking aid. people stand together.”

“People are suffering,” Guterres added, urging the international community to “step up and fully fund this critical effort.”

The announcement follows reports that a 17-year-old girl was miraculously rescued from the rubble of an apartment building on Thursday.

Aleyna Olmez was rescued 248 hours after being buried under rubble more than ten days ago, CNN reports.

“We will never forget you,” her uncle told rescuers after she was pulled from the rubble in the southern city of KahramanmaraÅŸ near the quake’s epicenter. BBC report.

A reporter from Turkey’s state news channel TRT Haber was allowed into Olmez’s hospital room, and footage showed her with her eyes open, shaking her head and smiling when asked about her condition.

Aleyna’s doctor told TRT Haber that the girl was unable to eat or drink while she was trapped, but was “still in good condition”.

More than 41,000 people have died in Turkey and Syria as a result of two earthquakes, according to the BBC. It is unclear how many people are still missing.
