‘YOP,’ ‘Unspoken,’ and ‘Asma’ look promising at this year’s festival crazy seriesThe Forum Co-Pro Pitching Sessions, still one of the industry cores of Series Mania, will be Harvest Edition in several ways by 2023.
The forum, which will take place from 21 to 23 March, now hosts a series of construction industry initiatives at Series Mania, which takes place in Lille, northern France, from 17 to 24 March.

A record 450 programs from 66 countries responded to offers, said Series Mania Forum Director Francesco Capurro.
“We have more and more projects coming from outside Europe. More and more people are coming from Africa: Kenya, Senegal, Nigeria, which is very encouraging, but also from other big markets outside Europe like Canada, Turkey, Taiwan ,” he added.
Capurro’s reasons are varied: “Series Mania is becoming more widely known, including outside Europe. The Lille-based event also has efficient partnerships with key industry bodies,” he added, citing Canadian Telefilm and TAICCA in Taiwan.
All 45 or more projects will be promoted at various sessions during the forum, Capurro said.
In addition, co-productions meet a growing industry demand. According to a report by the European Audiovisual Observatory, it accounts for only 12% of 2-13 episodes produced between 2015 and 2020. However, with global script commissions and spending on content in general tapering off, producers have a strong industry case to look for co-productions and gap financing in other countries, as well as early-stage distribution deals.
Total attendance at the forum is expected to be around 3,800, Capurro said. That would be another record. Series Mania will take advantage of a larger auditorium at the Grand Palais in Lille for its biggest event.
Crime dramas still dominate applications, Capurro said. Thrillers followed. Projects include a large number of historical dramas, and an increasing number of stories with female protagonists.
Kaprow added that many of the stories were inspired by true events. These may include some of the most striking-looking projects at the forum this year. “YOP” charts Gambian-Swedish hip-hop artist David Jassy’s long road to redemption after a horrific 2010 bout of road rage.
The novel series “Asma” is a biopic of Asma Al Assad, wife of the Syrian dictator. Also inspired by true events, “Unspoken” follows a man who drives from Poland to Kiev in an attempt to protect his wife and children at the start of all-out hostilities in Ukraine. Reality can be stranger than fiction. It can also deliver a more moving story.
