Aisha Meram, an 86-year-old resident of Hatay, Turkey, walked briskly to the field hospital with tears in her eyes, saying only one thing: “May Allah bless you.” UAE and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed.”

“It gives us hope,” Melam said, wiping away tears.

Devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria killed more than 46,000 people and wreaked unimaginable devastation on the region. The UAE has launched multiple aid operations, sending supplies, search and rescue teams, medical personnel and even setting up field hospitals to treat victims.

For three days, Melam had been watching the construction of the field hospital. “I wondered who was building here after the disaster. But when I learned that a field hospital was being built in the UAE, I could say ‘Alhamdulillah’ and pray for the leaders who made this much-needed decision,” Meram said.

She shed tears of joy during an interview with Khaleej Times. “I was waiting for the facility to open as soon as possible. When I saw a lot of people gathered at the field hospital, I dropped all my work and walked towards it (not very strong legs). On the way, I called all my neighbors and at home Children playing to thank the authorities.”

Meram has been a Hatay resident since birth and mentioned that they have some good healthcare facilities in the area. However, when the earthquake hit, the hospital was closed due to cracks in the structure. The province covers an area of 5,524 square kilometers and has a population of 1.6 million. It “urgently needs specialized medical facilities because there are a lot of elderly people and pregnant women there,” Melam said.

“When I learned that hospitals in the province were closed, I was terrified for the people living here. But this gives us hope of safety,” Meram said.

The hospital was established in about 5 days and can accommodate 200 patients at the same time. It has 2 intensive care units, 20 beds, and 12 private inpatient wards. The hospital covers an area of 2000 square meters and has two operating theaters, as well as laboratory and X-ray services. Local Turkish doctors and nurses will be in charge of the overall operation of the hospital.

The hospital is equipped with all the required high-tech equipment, making it a full-fledged facility. Specialist doctors who practiced at the provincial hospital before the earthquake will be in charge here.

Saeed Thani Hareb Al Dhaheri, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to the Republic of Turkey, Brigadier Sarhan M Al Neyadi, head of the medical team, Yasin Öztürk, Mayor of Hatay District, Mehmet Hacioglu, Mayor of Hatay City, and many other dignitaries attended the inauguration ceremony. They are excited to have a new hospital in the area.

‘We are with our Turkish brothers’

The ambassador sent a clear and resounding message – the UAE stands with their Turkish brothers no matter what happens. “The hospital was opened under the direction of His Highness Zayed Nahyan Sheikh Mohamed, President of the UAE. We started (building) the hospital and ended it quickly. This hospital is a gift from the people of the UAE to the people of Turkey to show Our brotherhood with the world,” Al Dhaheri said.

“We are negotiating with the Turkish authorities to set up more field hospitals in the quake-hit areas,” he added.

“We reach out and help people and human life because that’s the most important and precious thing to us. Our rescue teams are the first to get here and they won’t leave. They’re here to help you until The Turks don’t tell them to come back,” Al Dhaheri confirmed.

Following the inauguration, guests visited the field hospital and learned about the UAE’s humanitarian assistance to Turkey following the earthquake.
