“Thank you for their comments on India’s leadership at the UN and Vaccine Maitri. Wishing them a rich and incredible India experience!” he tweeted.

Vaccine Maitri is a humanitarian initiative by the Government of India to provide COVID-19 antiviral injections to countries around the world. The Government of India started providing injectables from January 20, 2021.

The term “global south” originally referred to those countries that were excluded from the era of industrialization and had ideological conflicts with capitalist and communist countries, which was exacerbated by the Cold War.

It includes countries mainly located in Asia, Africa, and South America.

The “Global South” is significant because of its large population, cultural richness and natural resources.

Understanding the Global South is important for addressing global issues such as poverty, inequality and climate change.

Many countries in the southern hemisphere still struggle with poverty and economic inequality, making it difficult to implement development plans.

At the recent Voices of the Global South Summit 2023 – “Unity of Voices, Unity of Purpose” – India sought to add another note to the chorus of global order.

The virtual forum provided valuable input from countries of the global south and could advance India’s ambition to successfully host the 2023 G20 summit in Delhi.

The forum also involved India’s reconnection with a global bloc of countries that has disengaged from Indian foreign policy concerns since the end of the Cold War.

Over the past three decades, the focus of Indian diplomacy has been on recalibrating its great power relations, bringing stability to the neighbourhood, and developing regional institutions in the expanding neighbourhood. (Arnie)
