Team Abu Dhabi ready for battle as UIM F1H2O World Championship breaks new ground in Indonesia

Sunday’s opening round in North Sumatra will run a 2,218-meter track on the Toba volcanic lake, which was formed by a major eruption 70,000 years ago and has an island nearly the size of Singapore at its center.

Three-time champion Torrent started last season with back-to-back victories, followed by two podium finishes before stealing the drivers’ title from Sweden’s Jonas Andersson in a tense final in Sharjah. Expect more of the same to happen time after time.

“My favorite thing about Formula 1 is that it’s never easy,” he said. “Last season I dominated for three quarters but it was so close at the end because a couple of things didn’t go our way, the engine problem and the crash.

“In this championship you never know. You have to play every game and get every point you can. I would love to have the same start as last season, but that’s not my standard, it’s our ball.” team standards.

“We want to win every race we play. We are well prepared, we have a good team and obviously we have a successful record (including five consecutive F1H2O team titles) so we want to be able to Fight to win.”

Torrente is enjoying the challenges ahead, notably the ‘UAE inter-state battle’ with Victory Team’s Erik Stark and Emirati Ahmed Al-Fahim and Sharjah Team’s Sami Selio and Ferdinand Zandbergen.

“It’s going to be very difficult because there are a lot of challengers this season and Jonas wants to get back the title,” he said. “I’m delighted to see the Victorious team back. They’re back with a good team of engineers and mechanics who know Formula 1.

“Eric is a great driver and Al Fahim is a rising star. It is great to have a little bit of competition and it gives the UAE more chances to be on the podium with us, Sharjah and Victory podium.”

Facing the new test in Indonesia, he said: “We’re a bit high up there, about 1,000 meters, so we’re definitely losing some horsepower. But the track that’s been laid out looks great and it’s fun, with two skimmer.

“It’s a huge body of water so if it gets windy it can be difficult. But I’m definitely looking forward to it. It’s always good to go somewhere new.”
